Interior Design Project Highlight: Comfortable Formality

Though every interior design project is different, my goal is always to make my client’s homes comfortable and inviting. In an extensive remodeling project, designing my clients’ gathering spaces meant creating a comfortable, yet formal feel with the use of color, fabric and furniture choices.

The original dining room felt dark and heavy. Though the area was not large, I opened up the space with a lighter rug and crystal chandeliers. The blue accent wall followed the first floor color scheme and added a layer of interest without weighing down the space. The sheers filtered the natural light for a soft touch. We reupholstered the chairs in blue and gold fabric, again following the first floor color scheme.

The house had two living/sitting rooms with the same main problems: they looked dark, and were filled with over-scaled furniture that made them feel cramped. I wanted to make both spaces brighter and more open by using our lighter color scheme of creams, blues and golds, and choosing furniture that was better scaled for the space.

The original living room was two stories, but I dropped the ceiling to make the space more cozy. We completely remodeled the fireplace, adding paneling and mirrors to again bring a lighter and reflective feel to the room. I covered the sofa in a soft chenille and paired it with a more formal damask on the two French-styled chairs. Silk pillows add to the formality for a lush yet inviting finishing touch. By lowering the ceiling, I was also able to create a wonderful library area above that includes three charming reading niches.

The hearth room I designed for large family gatherings. My clients wanted to maximize the seating as much as possible. I also wanted to take advantage of the fireplace and view as much as possible. Because there was so much space, I got to layer many textures and patterns in the room through fabric choices. The soft blue couches are offset by the large check fabric on the chairs, with highly textured and richly colored pillows. The floral window treatments complemented the outside view. I anchored the large stone fireplace with built-in cabinets stained to match the kitchen island..

The overall feel of these four spaces is a soft and inviting formality—bright and clean yet filled with depth and character.
